FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH BINGE DRINKING IN ADOLESCENCE: INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW Teresa Barroso Dominik Mendes Bruno Coutinho Nuno Marques Nursing School of Coimbra Portugal Lisbon 2017

We have no conflict of interest to declare TBarroso 2017

Background There are multiple factors that explain alcohol consumption and drinking patterns, namely changes in cognitive processes or expectations of alcohol effects Potentially modifiable risk factors are a priority in preventive care TBarroso 2017

(the legal drinking age was updated to 18 years in 2015) “The use of alcoholic drinks is quite evident amongst the Portuguese young, more commonly and frequently as age increases, especially from the age of 16, but with very relevant prevalence between the 10-15 years old”, under the legal drinking age (Calado, Lavado, & Dias, 2015:13) (the legal drinking age was updated to 18 years in 2015) TBarroso 2017

Drinking onset tends to occur at an early age: between 13 and 15 years “Alcohol consumption at such early ages is regarded as a natural and, therefore, expected experience” (Calado, Lavado, & Dias, 2015:13) TBarroso 2017

Binge drinking causes long-lasting effects on the adolescents’ brain Binge drinking is defined as a pattern of alcohol consumption of 4 drinks or more for women and 5 drinks or more for men on a single occasion Binge drinking causes long-lasting effects on the adolescents’ brain Crews, Vetreno, Qin, and Zou (2013); Naassila, Alaux-Cantin, Warnault, Legastelois, Bota, Pierrefiche, and Vilpoux (2013) TBarroso 2017
