Prevention of Corrosion
type 1 Cathodic Protection
Cladding Method: bonding layers of the aluminum alloy Examples: so-called rolled gold, which consists of a brass or steel core with a layer of gold on the outside
Galvanizing Method: coating a base metal, such as iron or steel, with a thin layer of zinc to protect the base metal from corrosion Advantage: Zinc is applied with greater ease and lower cost
Similarities find a lower metal on the Reduction Table in order to react before the Fe does
Cathodic Protection " a metal lower on the Reduction Table (higher oxidation potential ) is attached to or brought near to the Fe" ------------Chemistry 12 Notes on Unit 5-Redox
Some common examples of Cathodic Protection Mg stainless steel
type 2
Ceramic Materials Method: coat metal with ceramic enamel Advantage: harder, better corrosion resistance
cover materials to the metal, prevent the contact of the metal, oxygen, and moisture
type 3
Impressed current a coltage is applied with an external power supply to keep the Fe slightly negative. Thus, the Fe surface has excess e-s so it doesn't have to oxidize in order to supply e-s to O2 ------------------P55 of the note
