Introduction to Colonization The Age of Discovery Introduction to Colonization

The Age of Discovery was Led by: Renaissance - Revival of classical art, literature, and learning in the 15th and 16th Century. Protestant Reformation - A movement that challenged the Catholic Church, which in turn persecuted the Protestants. Stable European Governments, and New developments in sea travel in the European countries. Astrolabe was used for solving problems relating to time and the position of the Sun and the Stars.

Why Europeans explored the “New World” (late 1400’s to early 1600’s) shorter and better trade routes wealth adventure converts slave trade NOTE: Spain came first, it was looking for wealth and a shorter trade route. The other European nations came later, because they were trying to check Spain’s growing power and to find the Northwest Passage (shorter trade route).
