What is a PPG ? -- its purpose and how it operates. A summary of GP Practices and PPGs in North Somerset

The NHS post the 2012 Act Post the Health & Social Care Act 2012

Patient Participation Groups  are a feature of Primary Care in the United Kingdom. They offer patients an opportunity to be involved with and support their local General Practice. 1972 : first PPG. 1978 : NAPP: The National Association for Patient Participation 2011 : GP Practices incentivised to set-up a PPG 2015 : All practices required to have a PPG under their contract with NHS England Practices are required to make reasonable efforts for their group to be representative of the practice population. 2016: 1250/9000 PPGs affiliated to NAPP

Types of activity Meetings : e.g. 75 minutes, bi-monthly Surveys of patient views and exprience Friends & Family Test CQC Inspection HealthWatch Linking with other outside bodies: e.g. The OneCare Consortium

What is a PPG? Sunnyside PPG purpose:   Help patients to take more responsibility for their health. Contribute to the continual improvement of services and quality of care. Provide practical support for the practice and help implement change. Foster improved communication between the practice and its patients.

Triple Aim Improve the health of the defined population Enhance the patient care experience (including quality, access and reliability) Reduce, or at least control, the per capita cost of care

a 4th aim? Reduce the likelihood of physicians experiencing burnout – for they are increasingly prone to diagnostic and patient safety errors and less likely to fully engage with patients and colleagues. http://healthaffairs.org/blog/2016/04/21/make-the-clinician-burnout-epidemic-a-national-priority/
