The Industrial Revolution & Society / Environment

Effects on the Environment Almost all land in Western Europe is impacted by industrialization From 1450-1750 the most serious problem was deforestation During the Industrial Revolution European countries move away from timber Replace with Fossil Fuels (coal) Creates new long term environmental problems Acid Rain, Global Warming, etc.

New Industrial Cities EX. – Manchester England 20,000 residents in 1760 Over 400,000 by 1850 Rapid growth causes many problems: No urban planning Factories and worker housing are thrown together Air pollution No sewer or public water systems Leads to widespread disease outbreaks

CHOLERA Came from India Bacterial infection spread by drinking water w/ sewage in it

Bone disease caused by lack of sunlight Rickets Bone disease caused by lack of sunlight

SO WHAT? In England during the 1850’s life expectancy was 40 years In Manchester it was 24 What does that mean?

Demographic TRANSITION

Birth rates fall Lots of kids are now a problem Farms required lots of help, now kids are just another mouth to feed Death Rates fall As the IR goes on people tend to live longer By 1900 even working class people live above the subsistence level Diets improve Medical advancements Housing improves
