The Treaty of Versailles Sewing the seeds of World War II

War Guilt for Germany Had to take sole responsibility for starting WWI Had to pay huge reparations (33 billion) Had to give France use of the Saar coalfields

German military was affected Germany had to de-militarize the Rhineland. Germany had to shrink its military Personnel- no more than 100,000 soldiers Equipment- forbidden to build planes, tanks, ships

Germany’s territory was taken German land in Poland was seized. German colonies in Asia were redistributed.

The seeds of WWII were planted Germany was demoralized. The treaties caused Germany financial hardship. The treaties didn’t solve the problems (MAIN causes) that had caused WWI. Germans would look to a strong, nationalistic leader to restore their pride and dignity.
