Legal and Ethical Issues By Shovonte’ Bowen Class of 2019 February 23, 2017

Facebook & Social Media How did this happen ? In 2010 Christine Rubino posted a post on facebook, calling her fifth -grade students “devil's spawn” she said that she wants to bring them to the beach and drown them. When she posted the comment a student had drowned previously before the comment. She tried to cover up when officials heard about the vent. How it could have been avoided ? This could have been avoided by not posting it at all and not posting the remark that close to a student death. Where should the school/ law/ parents/ students should go from that point on ? I think they should not sue at all over the comment. The parents should go to the principle to resolve the issue and let other parents know what is happening. My Philosophy ? As me becoming a teacher soon, I feel that the principle was right for firing her. As a professional i would make sure that the teacher never get a teaching job ever again.

Emailing & Texting How did this happen ? A 32 year old teacher had an month long inappropriate relationship with a 14 year old student. Officer Railsback said that it appeared that text messages was exchanged. How it could have been avoided ? This case could have been avoided by the student tell an adult about the text messages. But also the teacher should know better not to text a student that she is working with. Where should the school/ law/ parents/ students go from that point on ? The school and law should get involved and revoke her teaching licences. The female teacher should not make bail to get out of jail and she should be put on the sex offender list. The parents should make sure the teacher never teach again. The students should go through counseling. My philosophy ? As being an older sister i would have raised sand. As a professional I would make sure that the teacher ever teach again and she stay in jail.

Plagiarism & Copyright issues How did this happen ? In 2002, a high school teacher failed 28 students that was taking her course. She resigned after being caught plagiarizing on a semester- long research paper. The students did not know copying information from the internet was plagiarizing. How it could have been avoided ? The teacher should have discussed what plagiarism is and how do you plagiarism. The teacher should have talked to the principle before failing the students. Where should the school/ law/ parents/ students go from this point on ? The school should make sure the teachers talk to the students about plagiarism. The law should not be involved in this case i think. Students should now know what it means to plagiarize a paper. My Philosophy ? Every student that failed she know how much trouble they can be in if they ever do that again.I feel like the teacher should not have lost their job because they thought they were doing the right thing to the students.

Cyberbullying How did this happen ? A Florida teenager committed suicide because she was cyberbullying. Tovanna Holton, 15, was being recorded bathing by her own friend. The friend posted online and got views. Before her death she was being bullied by her classmates and peers. She took her mother gun and shoot herself in the head. How could this been avoided ? I don't think this could have been avoided because she did not know that her friend would have done something so cold to her.She could have talked to someone that she was being cyberbullying. Where should the school/ law/ parents/ students go from this point on ? The school should get help for the people that are affected by her death. The law should get involved and put the people that are responsible for posting the pictures responsible for her death. The parents should get help and sue her friend and boyfriend for posting the pictures up of her. My Philosophy ? Personally i would have tried to talk to someone about the situation and try to get some help. In my opinion i think that every staff member should pay attention to a student behavior in class or outside the classroom to prevent this.
