How Relevant was the Curriculum? We have descriptions of experiments conducted in Washington, DC by Christine Allen of Conklin in Loudoun. She had to go to Washington because Loudoun didn’t have an accredited high school for African-Americans until 1941. She then became a LCPS teacher. How did the schools describe slavery, the Civil War and civil rights? There were problems. Were African-Americans prepared for major professions or only trades related to farming? We are examining segregated Teacher Institutes, rules for certification and training. We are also studying personal papers of Archie Richardson of Richmond, in 1913 the highest ranking African-American in Virginia government.
