Introduction UBOS was formerly the Statistics Department in the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development (MFPED) UBOS was formed by an Act of Parliament in June 1998 to develop and maintain the National Statistical System (NSS). The Bureau is the principal data collecting and disseminating agency responsible for coordinating, monitoring and supervising the National Statistical System.

NATIONAL STATISTICAL SYSTEM The NSS is the ensemble of all organizations and units within the country that produce and disseminate official statistics. The NSS entails a co-ordinated national effort aimed at improving the mechanisms and processes needed to produce relevant statistics. The NSS consists of: Data Producing Institutions (Ministries, Departments and Agencies) Data Suppliers, Users of statistics, and Research and Training institutions. The policies, principles, procedures and practices that govern statistical production (institutional framework) .
