War Clouds Gather

War Clouds Gather After WWI many Americans believed the nation should never again become involved in war.

War Clouds Gather In the 1930’s war clouds gathered with democratic governments collapsing in Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Imperial Japan.

War Clouds Gather Rulers in these countries, Adolf Hitler in Germany, Benito Mussolini in Italy, and Tojo in Japan set out to conquer neighboring countries.

War Clouds Gather When other countries failed to act to stop their expansion, Nazi Germany, Italy and Japan were emboldened to pursue their aggression into other countries.

Depression Diplomacy In the 1930’s people in the U.S. had too many economic worries to care what was happening elsewhere in the world. As threats of war in Europe and Asia grew, a movement toward isolationism took place.

Depression Diplomacy Isolationists in Congress pressed for a series of Neutrality Acts. These laws banned arms sales to countries at war. By limiting economic ties with nations at war, the U.S. hoped to stay out of foreign conflicts. (Remember WWI neutrality)

Cooperation with Latin America In the 1930’s the U.S. tried to improve relations with Latin America. Roosevelt announced what was called the Good Neighbor Policy. He withdrew troops from Nicaragua and Haiti. Monday 4/25

Cooperation with Latin America Roosevelt also withdrew the Platt Amendment which had limits on the independence of Cuba. Roosevelt also urged closer ties of nations in the Western Hemisphere. Roosevelt wanted closer ties to countries

Cooperation with Latin America Roosevelt wanted closer ties to countries nearer the U.S. with war looming in Europe and Asia.

Fascist Italy By the 1930’s dictators took power in Germany and Italy. Dictators-Ruler who has complete authority over a country. These dictators exploited economic problems and pushed feelings of extreme nationalism to win support.

Fascist Italy In 1922 Benito Mussolini seized power in Italy. Mussolini played the anger card about the Versailles Treaty ending WWI. Italy felt cheated by the treaty because they did not get all territory they wanted.

Fascist Italy Mussolini also used fears of economic unrest and fears of a Communist Revolution to win support for the Fascist Party.

Fascist Italy Fascist Party- a political philosophy or regime that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictator, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

Fascist Italy Once Mussolini was in power he outlawed all political parties except his own. He controlled the press and banned criticism of the government.
