War of the Republic of California Paul M. Knobel 1938 California St. Berkeley, Ca 94703 Introduction California stretches nearly 10o in latitude. This leads to very different environments from forests, to mountains, to deserts. The people that live in these different environments are just as different as the environments themselves. Southern California, SoCal, is a arid and relies on water from Northern California, NorCal, in order to exist. This resource is precious and has led to animosity between SoCal and NorCal. In this fictional scenario, NorCal stops the supply of water to SoCal. SoCal retaliates with its strong military presence in the south. California becomes divided in a civil war. One of the 1st major invasions of the war takes place in San Francisco. An amphibious operation lead by the Marines out of Camp Pendleton lands on the beaches of San Francisco late in the night to avoid detection and traffic. In a blitzkrieg fashion they take City Hall and subdue the local law enforcement. This is how it was done. Methods Suitability Analysis • Start with Network Analysis for San Francisco as supplied (lab10) • Create mask, using the draw tool, to set processing extent. • TractCentroids – add field for population density = population/area; Stats for pop_dense to get standard deviation and mean • Constraint: Select from TractCentroids pop_dense > 25,000. Export data. Buffer 1.5 miles, dissolving polygons. Add weight field (hiPop_wt) and populate with -1. • Benefit: Select from TractCentroids pop_dense < 9,000. Export data. Buffer 1 mile, dissolving polygons. Add weight field (lowPop_wt) and populate with +2 • Add SFPolice layer. • Constraint: Buffer 1.5 miles. Add weight field (SFPD_wt) and populate with -1. • Union constraints and benefits -> suitability map. Add weight field (suit_wt). Populate with sum of SFPD weight and population density weights. Select positive values and export. • Create coastline layer. Intersection of coast and suitable sites to get the possible locations along coast to land. Turn these lines into points to use in the network analysis. Network Analysis • New closest facility analysis. Selects a landing site. The route time (6 min) used for impedence for location- allocation problem • New Location-Allocation problem to find other sites to land to target police stations Results What was discovered was there needs to be 3 sites to be able to reach the Capitol and 5 out of 14 police stations at the same time ( -122.385, 37.787); (-122.389, 37.684); (-122.498, 37.69) Printing Note: Do not leave your poster until the last minute.
