Bishop Justus Church of England School Morning Worship Brigid, Abbess of Kildare 1st February 2017 Bishop Justus Church of England School
Let the light of Christ shine in our lives Gather The Lord be with you And also with you Let the light of Christ shine in our lives
Receive Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is strong as death, passion fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a raging flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If one offered for love all the wealth of his house, it would be utterly scorned. Song of Songs, chapter 8, verses 6 to 7
Engage Brigid (also known as Bride) was born in the latter part of the fifth century, of humble origin just five miles from Kildare. She was to become first a nun in the monastery there and then its Abbess. She is believed to have been baptised by St Patrick and the stories of her portray a woman of great compassion. By her prayers and miracles, she is reputed to have strongly influenced the formation of the Church throughout Ireland, where she is, with St Patrick, the patron saint. She died in about the year 525.
Engage Some discussion ideas … History often overlooks women who played an important part in the development of countries, like Ireland – why do you think this happens? Activity suggestion … The cross of St Brigid is made from rushes (see above). Make your own cross from household materials. Video suggestion … “It started with one little girl” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7MejP7pYjQ
Respond God, by whose grace Brigid, kindled with the fire of your love, became a burning and a shining light in the Church: inflame us with the same spirit of discipline and love, that we may ever walk before you as children of light. Amen
Go out into the world with the light of Christ Let us bless the Lord Thanks be to God Go out into the world with the light of Christ
