Cultural diversity Lesson 4

Answer as honestly as possible Answer as honestly as possible. Write “A” if you agree or “D” if you disagree with the following statements: Men who spend too much time on the computer are geeks. Boys are better than girls at sports. Guys are messy and unclean. Mexicans come illegally to this country. Muslims are terrorists. You must be anorexic to become a model. Blondes are dumb. Goths wear black clothes because they’re depressed. The best hairdressers are gay. Women don’t make good politicians.

Stereotypes If you marked “A” on any of the 10 statements, you were stereotyping. What is a stereotype?

A stereotype is … the grouping of races, groups or people, or individuals to make a judgment about them without knowing them. based on a prior assumption. a widely held, but oversimplified, image of a particular person.

Why is it bad to stereotype?

Why is it bad to stereotype? It’s hurtful. It can lead to bullying. It dehumanizes people. It can lead people to live lives driven by hate. It can cause the victim to live in fear. IT IS WRONG!!!

Reflect and write in your journal. Have you ever been stereotyped? Describe it. How did it make you feel? What personal decisions have you made about stereotyping?

Share with a partner or with the whole group only if you’re comfortable.
