MD v. DO - What’s the difference? Philosophy Education Practice Residency
Philosophy MD = Allopathic Focus on the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases DO = Osteopathic Holistic view of medicine See the person as a whole being rather than treating symptoms 4 tenants The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated. Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.
Education The vast majority is exactly the same! DO: an extra 200 hours in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine MD generally more competitive - more applicants The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated. Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.
Practice DO’s can specialize in anything MD’s can Many DO’s chose family medicine At the end of the day, you are a physician! The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated. Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.
Residency Past/Current: split residency programs Future: Merger!!!
