Fugitive Slave Act Stated – It was a federal crime to aid a runaway slave Fugitive slaves couldn’t – Testify on their own behalf Judges who ruled in favor of owner – Got $10 ($280) Judges who ruled in favor of fugitive - Got $5 ($140) Punishment for aiding slaves = 6 months in jail and $1,000 fine
