El Nino Southern Oscillation ENSO El Nino Southern Oscillation

ENSO El Nino Southern Oscillation Alternating pattern (oscillation) of prevailing wind patterns and oceanic temperatures in the Pacific Ocean between South America and Indonesia/ Australia

Normal Conditions Easterly Trade winds blow west (Walker Circulation) As the wind moves across the water it causes the ocean water to cycle This causes UPWELLING of nutrients = Productivity = Fish

El Nino Year (every 3-7 years) Easterly winds weaken Warm western water moves east Prevents upwelling Results in strange weather patterns in USA Wetter winter in California and South East Drier and warmer in the upper mid west to north east

La Nina Stronger Easterly Trade Winds than normal Results in cooler water temperatures and greater cycling of ocean water Results in greater upwelling Weather Patterns in US - Wetter North East - Drier and milder across most of central and southern US - colder in the north east

Overall comparison
