Measuring with Metric
1. Measuring various things Obtain a meter stick and use it to measure various classroom objects. Work in small groups. Take all initial measurements in cm then convert to both mm and m and decide which unit you should use when reporting the objects measurements.
Examples 1. Pencil length 18 cm 180 mm 0.18 m 2. Pencil width 0.7 cm 7 mm .007 m
2. Using your answers from questions 3 & 4 calculate the area of the classroom (A = L x W ). Be sure to label you answer with the proper units.
Classroom length 1220 cm (12. 20 m) Classroom width 765 cm (7 Classroom length 1220 cm (12.20 m) Classroom width 765 cm (7.65 m) Area = 1220 x 765 = 933300 cm2 Area = 12.20 x 7.65 = 93.33 m2 *(more appropriate because of the size of what we measure) * The units must be squared to represent area which is 2-dimensional.
3. Using your answers from questions 5 - 7 calculate the volume of the lab table (V = L x W x H) Be sure to label you answer with the proper units.
Length 150 cm (1. 50 m) Width 60 cm (0. 6 m) Height 75 cm (0 Length 150 cm (1.50 m) Width 60 cm (0.6 m) Height 75 cm (0.75 m) Volume = 150 x 60 x 75 = 675000 cm3 or 1.5 x 0.6 x 0.75 = 0.675 m3 Either answer is fine.
4. 1cm3 = 1mL, Convert the volume of your lab table to liters.
675000 cm3 = 675000 mL = 675 L
