Unit 2 Day 4

Bell Ringer What two types of plates converge (come together) to form mountains? What two types of plates converge to form volcanoes? At what type of boundary (convergent, divergent, transform) is new crust formed? From our Graham Tectonics lab, what is the difference between continental and oceanic crust?

Volcanoes: The Subduction Zone. http://earthguide.ucsd.edu/eoc/teachers/t_tectonics/p_subduction.html Use the animation to describe, step by step, what occurs at subduction zone. http://earthguide.ucsd.edu/eoc/teachers/t_tectonics/p_hawaii.html Use the animation to describe, step by step, how a hotspot creates volcanoes! Contrast: How are these two types of volcanoes created differently?

Plate Tectonics Map In pairs, label each boundary, and list at least (2) events or landforms that occur at each boundary. Place a + sign where new crust is created. Place a – sign where crust is destroyed. Label the Ring of Fire in Red! Label the 5 oceans. Create a key for the color each boundary is labeled. Over time, is Earth gaining or losing crust (total)?

Plate Boundary Challenge #1-8 (skip 1 line) For each image, name: (1) the type of boundary (2) the (2) plates involved: land, ocean (3) a landform/event that occurs there (i.e. mountain, valley, earthquake)
