Personal Reading Every day of class, we will start with independent silent reading. Please pick a book that you think that you will like. If you don’t like it, feel free to switch books. Each student will conference about their books to me and other students.

Phones and restrooms Please do not use your electronic devices in this classroom unless you have permission from me. Please limit your restroom passes for emergencies only (2 times per quarter—maximum). Please sign out before taking the pass.

What is ELA 11? A year-long required class Reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing Textbook covers many world cultures, including: Mesopotamian, Hebrew, Indian, Greek, Roman, British, Japanese, Chinese, Middle Eastern, African, Italian, French, German, Algerian, Eastern European, and Russian literature, amongst others.

What is ELA 11? (cont.) Several formal and informal writings, including: personal narrative, timed writings, literary analysis, problem-solution, persuasion, cause-effect, and research papers. At least one oral presentation per semester. Frequent review sessions for the Michigan Merit Exam in the Spring (SAT).

ELA 11 Assessment Common mid-term Common final SAT format/essay Common final Based on skills acquired and reviewed throughout the year. Each worth 20% of the semester grade

What is ELA 11? (cont.) Major works will include: Beowulf Macbeth (Shakespeare) The Canterbury Tales (Chaucer) Great Expectations (Dickens)

Other points of emphasis: Relevant current articles are reviewed and analyzed regularly One Book, One School program Alignment of ELA 11 with the vision of APHS, i.e. encouraging the intellectual growth, creativity, self- discipline, democratic responsibility and physical and mental health Professional Interview Day Collins Writing Program
