How does thermal energy affect the motion of particles? Particle Motion How does thermal energy affect the motion of particles?

All particles have energy due to their motion called kinetic energy The average of the amount of kinetic energy of the particles of an object When the particles move faster, the temperature of an object goes up When the particles move slower, the temperature of an object goes down Temperature

Homework Answer the following question: How is the motion of the particles of water at 80 ⁰C different from the motion of the particles of water when it is 30 ⁰C? Homework

DoNow: Copy Chart into your notebook. Fill in the missing spaces of the chart. Solid Shape Definite Shape Volume Particle Arrangement Tightly Packed together Particle movement Liquid Definite Volume Slide Past one Another Gas Free Moving Freely and fast

All particles have energy due to their position called potential energy Thermal Energy is The sum of the kinetic energy and potential energy of an object The more particles an object has, the more thermal energy an object has Thermal Energy

Heat is The movement or transfer of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler object Ex: If a cup of tea is 75 ⁰C, and the temperature of the room is 35 ⁰C, thermal energy will move from the tea to the room Thermal energy will continue to move until the temperature between the tea and the room are balanced Heat Transfer
