THE MOONSHOT MOMENT 90% Literacy in Grade 3 by 2018 Indian River County, FL

Our Moonshot Moment Vision Inspires Our Work Literacy is the gateway to all learning Our goal is 90% literacy by third grade Our aspiration is to be a literacy capital and model for the nation “Literacy is the #1 predictor of individual and community success.” - Annie E. Casey Foundation We learn to read by the end of third grade, so we can then read to learn Third Grade is the point of transformation Only 1 in 6 are able to catch up once they fall behind

What Does a Moonshot Community Stand For? A community that values the goal together: Everyone has a role in our shared success Schools can't do it alone!

Moonshot and Emergent Learning In a time of drastic change, it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists Eric Hoffer

What is a Learning Community? A Community in which…. “ People continually expand their capacity to create the results they truly desire, where new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, where collective aspiration is set free and where people continually learn how to learn together.” Peter Senge The Fifth Discipline

Our Framing Question What does it take to get 90% of our 3rd grade students reading on grade level by 2018?

Role of the Change Leader

Breakdown = Breakthrough

Emergent Learning Lesson Learned Disciplined attention to insights that emerge from collective work… Deliberate application of those insights to improving future results. Lesson Learned People notice and reflect on their results, then change what they do… New thinking and actions produce better results, even when circumstances change

Moonshot Classrooms Building Literate Citizens & 21st Century Skills Critical Thinking Creativity Collaboration Problem Solving A Moonshot classroom is building the 21st century skills to build the skills needed for tomorrow’s jobs: critical thinking, creativity, collaboration & problem solving. We are moving from memorization and recitation to higher level thinking. This is a complete culture shift in the way we teach and uncovering the way ALL students learn so that we reach the 9 out of 10 students needed to have a productive workforce and economy.A Moonshot classroom is building the 21st century skills to build the skills needed for tomorrow’s jobs: critical thinking, creativity, collaboration & problem solving.
