What does AVID stand for? Advancement Via Individual Determination
AVID’s mission is to… Close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
AVID Student Profile At CMS we are looking for students that need an extra push to be the best students that they can be and have a desire to be high achieving students. Need to be enrolled in at least 1 Pre-AP class Must have good conduct in ALL classes Good attendance Average to high grades and motivated to do better, but needs a little guidance Are willing to commit themselves to studying and homework each night
AVID class is NOT… AVID is not… For struggling students who have trouble passing classes A study hall A class for students with behavior issues
SO…now that you know what AVID means and who it is for… What do we do in the AVID class?
Note Taking and Organization In the AVID class we focus on how to take good, and useful notes. We refer to them as Cornell Notes. We teach you how to keep an organized binder (It’s one of your grades in the class ). We require the use of your CMS tracker to keep up with the middle school work load.
College Tutors Twice a week (Tuesday and Friday) we have college tutors come during class and help with any questions you might have from ANY CORE class. You work in tutorial groups during this time so you can collaborate with your peers (and the tutor) on questions you may have. The idea of tutorials is to support students in their rigorous classes and help them figure out strategies and problem solve in that subject area
Field Trips We attend 2 field trips every school year to colleges around this area. This last year we visited Rice University and Sam Houston State University. This year we visited A&M and University of Houston.
Extras Some extra time to get help with homework. Team building activities. Career guest speakers from all different professions Help with communicating with your teachers about any problems you have. Study groups with fellow classmates
