MULTIPLICATION

WHAT IS MULTIPLICATION? Multiplication is a quick way to add together equal numbers. For example: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 is the same as 3 X 4 However you work out the answer it will be......... 12

So............. John has 3 dogs, each dog has 4 legs. How many legs are there in total??

3 lots of 4 3 groups of 4 3 sets of 4 + = 12 4 + We can say: 3 lots of 4 3 groups of 4 3 sets of 4 3 times 4 3 multiplied by 4 4

Try these problems.... If there are 3 teachers and each teacher has 5 books, how many books are there in total? How would you write this calculation?

So........ 5 teachers x 3 books _______ 1 5

Can you complete these??? 9 6 4 x 8 x 5 x 7 How did you do??? 9 6 4 x 8 x 5 x 7 __________ __________ ___________ 7 2 3 0 2 8 __________ __________ ___________ How did you do???

Multiplying by 10 So you have now got the hang of using sets and multiplying single numbers what happens when we use bigger numbers?
