Repeated Addition A specified number of items is repeatedly arranged (grouped) a given number of times. One factor describes the number of items in each group; the other factor describes the number of groups.

Example of Repeated Addition There are six crayons in a box. How many crayons are there in three boxes? + 8

Rate A value or distance is associated with a unit. The product is the total value or distance associated with all the units

Rate Example Jeremy walks three miles an hour. How many miles does he walk in six hours? 0 3 6 9 12 15 18 1 2 3 4 5 6

Scalar (Comparison) Some quantity (a specified size or number of items) occurs a given number of times (the scalar multiple). The product is a multiple of the original quantity. MSP 4-6 Grant, Module 4-6, Session 2, Handout 2

Example of Scalar Marcus has six marbles. His brother has three times as many marbles. How many marbles does Marcus’s brother have?
