Citizenship and Our Other Roles in Society Chapter 24, section 3 Citizenship and Our Other Roles in Society
Playing Social roles: bubbles of the roles people play in society SELF CONSUMER CITIZEN FAMILY MEMBER STUDENT OR WORKER SOCIAL GROUP MEMBER FRIEND
QUICK WRITE What causes you to act the way you do when you are playing a certain role? (example: how you act at church or at school) Answer: Your behavior is determined in part by the set of expectation that people have of how someone in that role should act. Example: A cheerleader is expected to wear school colors and jump, dance, and lead the crowd in school cheers.
The citizen role Active Participants: For some people, playing the citizen role has high priority. When they are students, these people are the ones who take leadership roles in student government. Contributing to the Common Good: Many people are contributing to the common good when they play roles that they may not think of as citizens roles. For example, helping out at church with a food bank is contributing to the common good. Another example would be recycling. This contributes to the common good by saving resources for future generations.
Exit slip! Can you think of another example of contributing to the common good? It can be something you do or something you could do. Answers will vary. Tutoring younger students, helping your parents clean the neighborhood, taking food to someone in need
Welcome to Smallville!
Welcome to Smallville! Let’s pretend. You live in Smallville, USA. The small town of Smallville, USA has a large factory. Most citizens of this town work at the factory. PROBLEM: The factory is polluting the air with the smoke that it creates; It is a danger to everyone’s health.
Welcome to Smallville! SOLUTION: the only fair way to solve this problem is to have a public hearing. The town council wants to hear what YOU have to say! Today, your role is a citizen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eh6ONB3QzoE
How should the town council vote? Turn to page 195 in the “We the People” book and read that page. On pages 196-197, there are 5 group activities. I need two groups to be the town council. Other tables will pick one of the other group activities. You will read the paragraph that belongs to your group. THEN, you will answer the questions. Town Council Groups- you will read and answer the questions under the “town council” heading. Other groups- You will read your problem or concern under your group heading. THEN, you will answer the 4 questions under the “taking part in the public-hearing” heading. When every group is finished, the town council will make a decision after considering all the groups concerns or problems. Then, everyone by themselves will complete the “talking it over” questions.
