GRAPHING CALCULATOR Part 1 AM4.1a USING THE TI-83 OR TI-84 GRAPHING CALCULATOR Part 1 (The only difference is the memory available) PLEASE GET A YELLOW GRAPHING CALCULATOR (YOUR NUMBER.)

Home screen Graphing y = To graph 2nd Functions* Cursor Alphabet** Inverse Exponent Square Operations Number keys ENTER *Accesses blue items **Accesses green letters

To Reset the calculator, press the 2nd function, then the + key To Reset the calculator, press the 2nd function, then the + key. Press 7, then 1, and then 2. Reset your calculator. To return to the Home Screen, at any time, press 2nd, then QUIT (above the MODE button.) Choose the APPS button, then go back to the Home Screen. To clear the screen, use the CLEAR button. Type anything in, then CLEAR it.

To make your home screen darker or lighter, press 2nd, then the up or down arrow keys. Try it. UP makes it darker DOWN makes it lighter To access you last expression, just hit 2nd and ENTER. This is helpful when re-using an expression. To insert numbers, functions, etc., press 2nd, then the DEL key. It will insert text as long as you are typing. As soon as you arrow over or ENTER, it will stop. Type “32” in, then insert a “5”.

To graph, we use the Y= button Use the “x” button, here: (not the Alpha key.) Let’s graph y = 2x + 3. Type it into the “Y1 = ” line, then press GRAPH. (The bar in the corner indicates that it is calculating.) If yours doesn’t look exactly like this, that’s OK. We will look at some of the things that can affect the way a graph looks.

Notice, it is always the lesser to the greater. 10 -10 10 -10 Notice, it is always the lesser to the greater. The WINDOW gives info about the size and scale of the window we’re looking at. The “Xscl” and “Yscl” refers to the marks on the lines that represent 1. If it were 2, then it would represent 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. Don’t’ worry about the “Xres”, yet. We can cursor over and change the settings. Try it.

ZOOM has a menu of items, these are the ones that we will use: 6:ZStandard: This is where the x’s go from -10 to 10, and the y’s go from -10 to 10. This is what we will use most of the time, unless there are other instructions. What do you notice about the marks on x vs y?

5:ZSquare: to x and y coordinates have the same distance apart. What do you notice about the axis? Why would you want a squared window?

8:ZInteger: instead of moving pixel by pixel, the cursor moves (horizontally) integer by integer. The vertical position is calculated. This is one of those commands that have to be chosen, then executed. (Press 8, ENTER) Try it. What do the scale marks indicate?

TRACE moves over the line, pixel by pixel TRACE moves over the line, pixel by pixel. This accounts for the bizarre numbers at the bottom. Is there an easier way? If we’re not sure of what we need, we can use: 8:ZInteger: moves (horizontally) integer by integer. The vertical position is calculated. Use Y1 = 2x + 3 Go to ZOOM 8, then press TRACE. Notice the equation at the top. What do the two numbers at the bottom tell us?

Is there an easier way if we have an idea of what numbers we want to look for? Press TRACE. Now, what would the answer, “y”, be, if we wanted to ask about an “x”? Type in “3”. In the TRACE mode, just type in a number. It will calculate the answer for you! Notice the equation at the top. What do the two numbers at the bottom tell us?

How would you get to the TABLE function? What are the values on the left? What are the values on the right? The TABLE function allows us to see how the “x” and “y” behave for each equation you put in. Notice it says “Y1”. If we typed in another equation, say, Y2 = x2, then we would have another column. Now, let’s get to work!
