Colony history Massachusetts was a successful colony, with many striving settlements and trades.

Colonies start: There were twp Massachusetts Colony was founded in 1629. Massachusetts Plymouth was founded in 1620.

Colonies Established A group of Puritans wanted their children to grow up in an English culture, but wanted to practice their religion freely.

Colony Founded The Massachusetts Bay Colony was first chartered by the English crown in 1629 as a joint stock trading company. The Massachusetts Plymouth Colony was founded by the group of Pilgrims that were on the Mayflower in 1620. John Carver was elected governor of the Pilgrim settlement at Plymouth after signing the Mayflower Compact. William Bradford was the governor of the Plymouth Colony for 30 years

Colony trades Fish, whale products, fur, timber products, metals and metal products, raw wool, and ships were produced to export and make money.

Colonists The Massachusetts Bay Colony was made up of Puritans The Massachusetts Plymouth Colony was also made up of Puritans.

Government The colonists formed a theocracy Plymouth formed its own government through the Mayflower Compact which is a social contract that the people signed to agree to abide by the new government’s laws.

Region Association The region of New England is who the colonies became associated with.

Geography and Climate: The physical geography of Massachusetts is composed of hills, rivers, and lakes. There are mountainous regions to the west and coastal bays to the east. The climate is very dramatic - 4 seasons

Religious Practices: Puritans and Pilgrims religious practices in the colony.

FOOD Food in the Massachusetts colony consisted of stews, vegetables, boiled meats and corn meal. The average family ate a dish known as hasty pudding, which was made with milk and cornmeal. Stewed or baked beans were also served as was Indian bannock, which was made by mixing water and cornmeal and baking it above the fire for bread; sometimes a variant was made using rye meal that the colonists baked with peas and beans in a brick oven to make brown bread.

Education Puritans believed that education was necessary in order to read the Bible to receive salvation. This was in line with the beliefs of the Protestant Reformers.

FUN Make candles, yarn, soap, feed chickens, sew, and cook. They also played games such as who could chop down the most trees.

Interesting Facts Massachusetts means 'at the great hill', or 'large hill place'. Interesting Massachusetts Colony Facts: Plymouth Colony was founded in 1620, at Plymouth, Massachusetts, by Pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower, a ship carrying settlers. The Massachusetts Bay Colony wasn't settled for another 10 years. Did you know its original settlers signed the Mayflower Compact, the first example of self-rule in the 13 colonies?
