Roosevelt: shaping the modern presidency

The National Congress of Mothers How does the reading relate to the goals of the Progressive Movement? Answer in an ACES Paragraph Answer: Answer the question. What is the prompt asking you? Cite: List a piece of textual evidence (a line from the text) that supports your answer. Explain: Explain how your evidence supports your answer. Significance: State why your answer, evidence, and explanation is important and why this question is overall important.

Thesis 1-2 sentences that directly answer prompt. Prompt: Analyze the ways immigration changed in the late 1800s AND the responses to that change. Thesis Examples: Immigration changed in the Gilded Age by becoming more diverse which in turn led many Nativists to try to reduce the amount of immigrations allowed into the country through the Immigration Restriction League and literacy tests. Immigrants came from a wider variety of countries, religions, and ethnicities in the late 1800s which triggered racist reactions from certain Americans, despite the fact that this contrasted with America’s history as a nation of immigrants. Immigration changed by becoming more diverse which caused negative reactions by Americans.

DBQ (40 points) I = Ideas [10 points] Overall quality of your response to the prompt starting with thesis. C = Citations [10 points, 2 points/doc] You cited specific documents Ex. Immigration was a cause of urbanization (Doc A). BK = Background Knowledge [10 points] You used knowledge we learned in class and brought that into your essay. D = Use of Documents [10 points] You analyzed vs. summarized meaning you connected the docs together and to bigger events/themes of the class.

Roosevelt In Office Square Deal – name of Roosevelt’s progressive reform movement intended to give Americans (including businesses, labor, consumers) a better life 3 “Cs” Corporation Control Consumer Protection Conservation Movement

Corporation Control Sherman Antitrust Act - outlawed monopolies Department of Commerce and Labor (1903) – federal cabinet positions that investigate corporations for illegal activity Expedition Act (1903) – allowed antitrust lawsuits to be given priority status, therefore go to court sooner

Consumer Protection Anthracite Coal Strike (1902) – ended when Roosevelt threatened to use the Army to take control of the business  sides with workers rather than employers Pure Food and Drug Act (1906) – required proper labeling of the contents of food and drugs Meat Inspection Act (1906) – required all meat to be inspected and meet sanitary guidelines

Conservation Movement Antiquities Act (1906) – gives the president the ability to declare public lands as National Monuments preserving the area and land from development Preserved 230 million acres of land by the end of his presidency

The Modern Presidency As Roosevelt took office, there were arguments over who was the most powerful man in America: the president or the big businessmen like J.P. Morgan. Roosevelt solidified the power and authority of the president Did this through photo shoots, press releases, interviews, public speeches Roosevelt also oversaw the greatest expansion to the “Executive Mansion” adding the West Wing and renaming the entire building – the White House
