Common termination methods: Terminal and crimping Common termination methods: Termination is a key concept in connector design. It refers to the method used to join a terminal and a conductor. Good termination assures solid electrical contact and maximum strength between the conductor and the terminal. Below is the common termination methods: Crimping      Insulation displacement connection (IDC)     Wire wrap    Soldering     Surface mount technology (SMT)     Press-fit Termination is the method used to join a terminal to conductor. Good termination assure solid electrical contact and maximum strength. The common termination methods, include crimping, IDC, wire wrap, soldering, SMT and press-fit.

Terminal and Crimping Termination Type Soldering Press-fit IDC Wrap SMT Crimping Here are pictures of various type of termination.

Knowledge Check Press-fit connector used more solder compare SMT connector when assembled to PCB. A. True B. False Plating is the process of coating terminals of base metal with a layer of nickel, tin, or gold to improve their electrical performance. IDC method may be used for an un-insulated wire as well.
