Module 5 OPERATING COMPUTER SYSTEMS Week Two Sep 28, 2016– J. Smith CAP

Objectives At the end of the lesson the student should be able to: 1. Identify onscreen messages, coded beeps. 2. Understand what is the reasoning behind system power up and why HDD drives stays on continuously with LED lights 3. Explain what is a blue screen

Activity Non electrocuted The electrocuted Computer Technician vs Customer Non electrocuted The electrocuted

The HDD

Beep codes

LED

LED cont’d LED - light-emitting diode (a semiconductor diode which glows when a voltage is applied). On the HDD, it indicate when the storage device is being used. If the hard drive activity light is continuously lit, especially when the computer isn't otherwise responsive, it's often times a sign that the computer or device is locked up or frozen.

Blue screen of DEATH!!! Windows XP, VISTA, 7

Blue screen of DEATH!!! Windows 8, 10

Assignment Read on the Potential safety hazards : - electrical shock - damage to circuit boards - electrostatic discharge - partial short circuit. Explain in your own words, what are those hazards and how can they be prevented.
