We will send out handouts that you can print out about HOW TO WRITE RESOLUTIONS, HOW THE CONFERENCE WORKS At the next meetings, we will go over how you can start preparing for the conference, including how to write POSITION PAPERS, and choosing the committee and country you want to represent

MUN Announcements Part 2 If you are going to the HAMUN conference, please take your phone out right now and message the remind (if you haven’t already) saying that you are willing to pay the $40 dollar fee. This will be the highest price you will have to pay to attend HAMUN because of our constant fundraising efforts conducted by Eric, our treasurer, and the rest of the officers. We already have raised enough money to cover bus fees and substitute-teacher fees, but not have enough to cover the ~$2500 dollars necessary to pay for all of your delegate fees. We will try to reduce how much you all have to pay, but as of right now we need to know that you can/will be able to pay For your convenience, the fee will be put in your Skyward account-- just like any other school fee-- once you agree to pay the $40 dollars.

MUN Announcements Part 3 Speaking of fundraising efforts, we will be having Model UN spirit day/s next week on Wednesday and Thursday, November 8 and 9. We will be getting 10% of the proceeds of the orders that say they came there for our club! - Get 1 MUN and 1 outside volunteer hour for NHS, NEHS, NSHS, or NFHS by showing us a receipt of meal - Even if you don’t need the hours/point, the food is really good and it’s a good way to support the club! There are vegetarian options! - Please tell your friends and family! We would greatly appreciate your financial assistance and they get. - When you do go there, please say you are with Dawson Model UN!

What is a Resolution? A resolution is the desired result of a Model UN conference- it is a piece of “legislation” that your committee helps to create To start writing a resolution, meet with other delegates to form blocs, or groups of people with similar ideas. Start mapping out solutions to the issue your committee is facing. YOU MAY NOT USE PRE-WRITTEN SOLUTIONS! Your working paper needs a HEADING with SPONSORS and SIGNATORIES, as well as PREAMBULATORY and OPERATIVE CLAUSES Once you create a paper, it is a WORKING PAPER. The paper must be submitted to the diaz for approval, and then it will be assigned a number. It is now a DRAFT RESOLUTION. There will be a motion to consider the draft resolution, and there will be further debate, with speakers coming up to answer questions about the draft resolution.

What is a Resolution cont. Before voting on the resolution, there will be a chance to change the resolution, consisting of FRIENDLY and UNFRIENDLY amendments. FRIENDLY amendments are endorsed by all the sponsors of the Draft Resolution UNFRIENDLY amendments are opposed by atleast one Sponsor of the resolution, and will be voted on seperately during the voting procedure. After a motion to Close Debate, the Draft Resolutions will be voted on, and with a majority vote, the Resolution can become a draft resolution.

The Heading Committee: The Human Rights Council Topic: Child Slavery in Sub-Saharan Africa Sponsors: Zimbabwe, Somalia, Equatorial Guinea (in alphabetical order) Signatories: Saudi Arabia, Sudan, China, UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Tunisia, South Africa (quorum, or 20% of the committee must be signatories, alpha order)

Preambulatory Clauses THE HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL, RECALLING the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which declares, “No one shall be held in slavery or in servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all forms,” (these clauses address the committee and describe the context of the issue) ALARMED BY the lax communications between nations concerning human trafficking of women and children, (these clauses begin with a present participle verb or phrase in all caps) EMPHASIZING that human trafficking is the third largest worldwide criminal activity today, (these clauses must EACH end with a COMMA)

Operative Clauses 1. CALLS for stronger communication between nations regarding human trafficking; (these clauses describe the actions that should be taken by the committee) 2. FURTHER CALLS for greater self awareness of efforts to end human trafficking within each nation; and (the clauses should be numbered and separated by semicolons) 3. RECOMMENDS the enabling of a mutual defense force that one UN personnel per member nation be appointed to for the purpose of: Bolstering local efforts within each nation, and Rausing local volunteers to defend against and educate citizens. (each clause must start with an action word or phrase in all caps, and end in a period)
