Soldering Iron Project ELEC163 Professor Tim Johnson 11/22/2018 S.I.P.

Introduction Your manufacturing group has been selected to improve the company’s (WIT) soldering iron. 11/22/2018 S.I.P.

Customer Demand The WIT HOT IRON sales team has requests from customers to use the Model 2001 soldering iron on their automated assembly line. The marketing department has determined that sale orders & revenues could increase significantly. The increased work load could be handled with 3 new employees. 11/22/2018 S.I.P.

Projected Sales Increase 11/22/2018 S.I.P.

Design Features Desired The soldering iron will be used in an automated assembly line process. The operator of the iron will be at a remote location. The temperature of the iron is required to be at 300oF +/- 10oF 11/22/2018 S.I.P.

Design decisions How can you remotely control the temperature of the iron? How can you sense the temperature of the iron? How could HPVee assist us? 11/22/2018 S.I.P.

Needed information #1 How does a soldering iron work? Sketch out or list the steps necessary to operate a soldering iron. 11/22/2018 S.I.P.

Needed Information #2 How does a temperature sensor work? Read the literature handed out by your professor. 11/22/2018 S.I.P.

Brainstorming Session #1 How will all the parts work together? Begin with a function analysis sketch. Have you included the feedback loop? 11/22/2018 S.I.P.

Brainstorming Session #2 What could control turning the iron on and off? How could you read the sensor information? How could you automate the decision making? 11/22/2018 S.I.P.

Research Find a sensor that would be appropriate for this application. Find a relay that could be controlled by HPVee and handle 120 Volts AC. 11/22/2018 S.I.P.

Homework Write up a memo that explains how you want to solve this problem. 11/22/2018 S.I.P.

What to include in the Memo Identify the client and his needs. Formulate a Goal Statement. List the objectives. List the constraints. 11/22/2018 S.I.P.

Next Steps Use the Internet to research information on relays and sensors. Include in your memo the source of your information. The memo might well exceed one page. Utilize the one-page handout to guide you. 11/22/2018 S.I.P.

Good Luck (End of Presentation) Students should assemble in their work groups and begin sharing with each other their ideas and assigning tasks to accomplish their immediate goal of collecting information to write the memo. 11/22/2018 S.I.P.
