or “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Dynamic Scheduling”

What does “Dynamic Scheduling” mean, anyway? In order of conference attendance, everyone will pick their schedule individually with as much freedom as possible, as long as: The proposed schedule meets all requirements for graduation All services are appropriately covered

Example He’s picked ID, an ICU/MC block, and VA Elective to finish the year The stuff above are his PGY-2 education requirements; ID is done, still needs more ICU NF/MC rotations The stuff at the bottom are the rotation coverage requirements; ID is covered with at least 1 resident, but 1 is not enough for either ICU NF or MC Note Jerry was able to schedule a 2 week wards block – more info to follow on that in then next few slides Jerry goes next. He wants in on this ID party too, but that would put too many people on ID! No can do, Jerry. Note that 3 weeks of ICU NF & MC are completely covered Also note that ID can be covered with 1 or 2 residents; some blocks are like that Brennan goes next. He decides Mario is a great guy, and tries to take as many rotations with him as possible. We’ll start with Mario

Required Rotations Rotation #wks PGY2 BSW Wards 2 VA Wards 6 VA ICU 4 Heme/Onc ID GI ICU NF 5 Med Consult BSW Elective VA Elective Cont. Clinic 10 Rotation #wks PGY3 BSW Wards 6 Hospitalist 2 MICU 4 CVICU Pulm Palliative BSW NF VA Elective BSW Elective Neuro Endo Rheum Cont. Clinic 10

F.A.Q. My conference attendance still hasn’t been updated in New- Innovations!?!? Yasmeen was out of town this past week, but we will go through all emails sent prior to the deadline before deciding the order You will get an email stating what place you are on the order You will get an email stating if you are likely to be paged to the office for scheduling that day

F.A.Q. Once I’m paged to the office, how long do I have to get there? Please arrive to the Chief Office as soon as possible after you are paged If you cannot arrive within 30 minutes, please contact me immediately If you do not respond and do not show within 30 minutes, you will be skipped and added to the end If you are on nights / ED / vacation, we will figure it out on an individual basis

F.A.Q. What if I only want certain rotations, and I don’t care about the rest? That’s fine! I’ll finish out your schedule once everyone else has had a chance to pick This actually makes things easier on me!

F.A.Q. Can I select two week wards rotations as a PGY-2? Yes, with conditions: If you select a two week wards block, you will be expected to have no RRC days during that block (just like PGY-3s) You must pair it with a two week block that allows you to obtain all of your RRC days as required by ACGME Your selection should not leave an unreasonable gap in coverage

F.A.Q. Will there be a Holiday Block? I’m working on it It depends on coverage for the intern schedule primarily If there is one, PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents might need to cover intern shifts If it does happen, there will be no RRC days during the block It will be randomly assigned, but tradable

F.A.Q. When can I take vacation? The rules are the same as past years No vacation during Wards/ICU/Nights/Clinic No vacation during Jeopardy, but you can trade Jeopardy coverage Up to 5 days on a 4 week service (year total) Up to 3 days on a 2 week service (year total) Heme/Onc, despite usually being wards, is vacation-legal

F.A.Q. What if I’m pregnant / my partner is pregnant / I’m getting married? Let me know as soon as possible Seriously, it’s just easier that way Yes, I’ll be discrete about it There are things we do, but it’s a lot of detail to go into now But really, ASAP please

If you have other questions, please see me after conference
