Welcome to Physical Science Snookal, Hughes and Braden Room 235

Warm Up: 9/22/2015 Please do this on a piece of paper to turn in.

Warm Up: 9/22/2015

In the early 1600s and before, people used to believe…. The Earth was the center of the solar system. They had evidence for that! We now know differently. Galileo Galilei

The same applies in here: You’ve shown evidence for who you are. And that evidence does not PROVE anything! In here, all is up for re-invention WHO ARE WE GOING TO DISCOVER THAT YOU ARE TODAY? Joy of discovery PROMPT: Write something that people believe about or that you believe about yourself that you experience as constraining (ex: you are dramatic). - if you don’t HAVE to be that way, how could you be? What is your goal around this new way of being for this year?

The Marshmallow Challenge! Who has tried the marshmallow challenge? What is it?

- You May Only Use These Materials - Each group will receive: 20 sticks of spaghetti 1 meter of tape 1 meter of string 1 marshmallow - You May Only Use These Materials -

Goal Your team’s goal is to build the tallest free standing structure. The marshmallow must be on top. The structure will be measured from the top of the marshmallow to the table top. What does it mean to be a free standing structure?

Rules You may only use the materials provided. The structure will be measured from the top of the marshmallow to the table. The structure must be free standing. Your team will have exactly 18 min!

Marshmallow Challenge Board Meeting Problem Possible Solution Evaluation (did it work) Set up whiteboards like so. In three rounds of board meetings teams will present each column.

List at least 5 problems with your team’s design. Prepare a presentation on the 1st column on your whiteboard. Be specific Write clearly Include diagrams

For each problem discuss and decide on a possible solution. Prepare a presentation in the 2nd column on your whiteboard. Be specific Write clearly Include diagrams

Try Again using your new ideas You may only use the materials provided. The structure will be measured from the top of the marshmallow to the table. The structure must be free standing. Your team will have exactly 18 min!

Evaluate each of the solutions your group tried in the second challenge. Prepare a presentation on your whiteboard. Be specific Write clearly Include diagrams

Exit Ticket (on a piece of paper to turn in) Think of the experience you had working in a group today. How well did your group work together? Explain. Did you have a chance to share all of your ideas? – why or why not? Did you have a chance to hear all of your group member’s ideas? - why or why not? Did your group use some ideas from all members? - why or why not?
