“Things They Didn’t Tell You About Being Section Chair” You Need to train your volunteers Train your Excom members with CLE (Center For Leadership Excellence) https://ieee-elearning.org/CLE/ (IEEE positions, Professional) Train them in vTools, SAMIEEE, L31s etc Trained volunteers are more valuable IEEE training available at IEEE Technical Activities Operations http://ieee.org/volunteer-development (General and Professional)

“Things They Didn’t Tell You About Being Section Chair” Finding Volunteers – You need to recruit, recruit, recruit from day one Your job is to make people want to get involved Communicate effectively Have job descriptions available so potential volunteers know what is involved Try to find people with energy - Try to find young people – find new people

“Things They Didn’t Tell You About Being Section Chair” You will face challenges in your section Individuals, finances, Personality clashes, dwindling membership numbers Unmotivated volunteers, disruptive volunteers Encourage all – Be a problem solver – we are engineers Be inclusive –make your section have a welcoming environment Don’t play favorites - Celebrate all activities going on in the section If you find problems in the section – you can’t change it all at once Tackle things one at a time

“Things They Didn’t Tell You About Being Section Chair” Don’t let your Excom meeting become a boring dirge Don’t let people read their reports - Invite outsiders to your Excom meeting Be a team builder Think outside the box don’t be afraid to try something new –Just because that’s the way it was always been done in the section doesn’t make it right Skills needed as Section Chair – Salesman, engineer, motivator, cleric, communicator, Teacher, Listener, Conflict Manager, Example setter, counselor, and of course a Leader
