Energy Transformations

An energy type can be transformed into another type of energy. Electrical Energy Light Energy This is called Energy Transformation.

The energy starts as one type (the energy it USES) Light Energy (Electromagnetic) Electrical Energy It ends as a different type (the energy it GIVES)

Examples: Rubbing your hands together USES mechanical energy and GIVES thermal energy-- your hands start feeling warm!

Eating food USES chemical energy and GIVES mechanical energy-- you now have energy to move!

A fan USES electrical energy and GIVES mechanical energy-- the blades are now moving!

An electromagnet USES electrical energy and GIVES magnetic energy-- the metal has become magnetic!

Can you identify the transformation? You will need to be able to tell what energy is USED and what energy it GIVES

What energy does it USE? It uses ELECTRICAL energy, because you have to plug it in.

What energy does it GIVE? It gives off microwaves which are ELECTROMAGNETIC energy.

What energy does it USE? It uses lightwaves from the sun, which is ELECTROMAGNETIC.

What energy does it GIVE? It gives off electricity which is ELECTRICAL energy.

What energy does it USE? It uses CHEMICAL energy from the flame.

What energy does it GIVE? It gives off THERMAL (heat) and ELECTROMAGNETIC (light)

What energy does it USE? It uses ELECTRICAL energy because it gets plugged in.

What energy does it GIVE? It gives THERMAL energy because it heats the bread.

What energy does it USE? It uses CHEMICAL and THERMAL energy from burning gasoline.

What energy does it GIVE? It gives MECHANICAL and KINETIC energy because the parts move to make the car drive around.

What energy does it USE? It uses POTENTIAL energy from being up high before a fall.

What energy does it GIVE? It gives KINETIC energy because it moves fast downhill.

What energy does an atomic bomb USE? It uses POTENTIAL and NUCLEAR energy from the atoms that will be split.

What energy does an atomic bomb GIVE? It gives ELECTROMAGNETIC energy as radiation, and THERMAL heat.
