Unit 21 Assignment 2

What is a Scientific Journal? Starter Activity: List the names of scientific journals you’ve heard of…

Task You must write a journal article that investigates the effectiveness of vaccines against common diseases. These may include Influenza, Measles, Mumps, Shingles, Human Papilloma Virus, Hepatitis or Malaria. You can also include other diseases of your choice.(Ebola?)

You must structure your journal as a real scientific journal would be published. You will be graded on the quality and depth of knowledge explained in your article.

Assignment 2: Why Should We Continue with Immunisation? Criteria reference To achieve the criteria the evidence must show that the student is able to:   Task no. P3 explain how the body defends itself against infection 1 M2 explain how the cells of the immune system allow an immune response to be evoked and maintained D2 compare and contrast the effectiveness and efficiency of non-specific defences with specific defences

P3: How does the body defend itself against infection? Physical Barriers to infection Non-specific immune response (Phagocytes) Specific Immune response (Lymphocytes) A fairly detailed overview

M2 In depth information about how the immune cells work. Discuss vaccines: how they work, examples .

D2 For a Distinction you must analyse how the effectiveness and efficiency of the different immune responses (eg specific and non-specific) perform and how vaccines improve the success of the immune response against disease.

Layout This assignment should be written as if it was a Journal article. The structure / layout needs to be in the recognised format of a scientific journal.

Journal structure • Title Page • Abstract • Introduction • Main body • Results • Discussion • References • Acknowledgments

Today’s Lesson Get used to reading Journal articles Complete a research worksheet about the structure and features of a scientific journal article. If you finish, remind yourself of the work we’ve covered on the Immune system and Vaccines by looking back in your notes and/or using text books to make notes.
