The Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit In Creation & Revelation

The Holy Spirit In Creation & Revelation Work in Creation

Work in Creation Father & Son’s Work: Father: creator, planner (Gen.1:1) Son: agent through whom done John 1:1-3 1 Cor. 8:6 Col. 1:16-17 Heb. 1:3 Work in Creation

Work in Creation Father & Son’s Work: Spirit’s Work: Organizing (Gen. 1:2) World created – not yet organized “Without form” – Waste “to lie waste” (Strongs) “Void” – Empty (Strongs) “The original terms tobuw (OT:8414) and bohuw (OT:922), which we translate ‘without form and void,’ are of uncertain etymology; but in this place, and wherever else they are used, they convey the idea of confusion and disorder.” (Clark) Work in Creation

Work in Creation Father & Son’s Work: Spirit’s Work: Organizing (Gen. 1:2) World created – not yet organized Spirit moved on face of waters (v. 2) Infers that Spirit did something about earth being “waste and void” Moved / hovered – “The words portray the energy-giving presence of God, swathing and caressing the chaos and unfinished earth as he prepared to complete his creation. Like a devoted mother bird, he moved about, lavishing his love on the newborn world” (Wycliffe) Work in Creation

Work in Creation Father & Son’s Work: Spirit’s Work: Organizing (Gen. 1:2) Adorned the heavens (Job. 26:13) KJV – “Garnished” Boles thinks: placing each planet in place Barnes: “He has formed the stars which constitute so beautiful an ornament of the heavens” Work in Creation

The Holy Spirit In Creation & Revelation Work in Creation Work in Revelation

Work in Revelation Inspiration & Revelation Inspiration – God breathed (2 Tim. 3:16) “The supernatural influence exerted on the sacred writers by the Spirit of God, by virtue of which their writings are given Divine trustworthiness” - Benjamin Warfield (ISBE, III:1473) Work in Revelation

Work in Revelation Inspiration & Revelation Inspiration – God breathed (2 Tim. 3:16) Revelation – The will of God expressed in human language – is the result of inspiration Work in Revelation

Work in Revelation Inspiration & Revelation Old Testament David spoke by Spirit (2 Sam. 23:2) Now these are the last words of David. Thus says David the son of Jesse; Thus says the man raised up on high, The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel: The Spirit of the LORD spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue. Work in Revelation Matt 22:43-44 He said to them, "How then does David in the Spirit call Him 'Lord,' saying: The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool" '?

Work in Revelation Inspiration & Revelation Old Testament David spoke by Spirit (2 Sam. 23:2) Prophets were moved by the Spirit (2 Pet. 1:20-21) Work in Revelation

2 Pet. 1:20-21 Prophecy did not owe its origin to man 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. Prophecy did not owe its origin to man Prophecy had its origin from God Use the instrumentality of human authors “Moved” = borne along as a ship moved by the wind Moved by the power of the Holy Spirit

The term here used is a very specific one The term here used is a very specific one. It is not to be confounded with guiding, or directing, or controlling, or even‑leading in the full sense of that word. It goes beyond all such terms, in assigning the effect produced specifically to the active agent. What is "borne" is taken up by the "bearer," and conveyed by the "bearer's" power, not its own, to the "bearer's" goal, not its own. The men who spoke from God are here declared, therefore, to have been taken up by the Holy Spirit and brought by His power to the goal of His choosing. Benjamin Warfield, Inspiration
