Heather Schroeder, MFA Stacy Sculthorp, PhD Capella University If There’s a Place You Need to Go, I’m the One You Need to Know, I’m the Competency Map! Heather introduce Heather Schroeder, MFA Stacy Sculthorp, PhD Capella University

Goal: where are we going? Discuss how the emerging IMS Global specification for extended transcripts enables learners to share their competency map Heather The best way to reach a destination is to consult a good map. That's the idea behind Capella University's competency map, a visualization of the knowledge, skills, and abilities learners have demonstrated in their courses. The focus of this session is to discuss how the emerging IMS Global specification for extended transcripts enables learners to share their competency map with other institutions and employers. “Where” are we going with this? Let’s follow the map!  Our goal is to … In order to achieve this goal, we are going to follow the map. We will start with CBE, competency map, then extended transcripts.

Agenda: how will we get there? Competency based education Define how the competency map reflects Capella’s competency- based education and assessment mission. Competency Map Discuss how the competency map is a real-time visualization of the individual learning process. Extended Transcripts Describe the extended transcript specification that enables students to exchange the data visualized in their competency map. Heather You are here!

You are here! CBE: Where do we start? Foundation: Curriculum aligned to professional standards. Competencies designed against job- related skill needs. Transparency and evolution Heather In order to understand the competency map – we must first review the concept of competency-based education. At Capella, the curriculum is created and aligned to professional standard. The goal is to teach students the information they need to know to directly and immediately succeed in their field. This means that competenices and curriculum are designed against job-related skill needs. For example (give example) Why does this matter? It matters for many reasons, one them being that employers are now just as concerned about what a graduate can DO as much as how much they KNOW. A competency is written as an action – the goal is to transfer this knowledge. Of course, this is all good philosophically, but there are challenges in the actual application of this. Part of this application is transparency: two examples of this “next step” are included in the presentation today – the Cmap and the ExTranscript. You are here!

Scoring Guide Criteria feam: using a compass Fully Embedded Assessment Model (FEAM) Tightly aligned scoring guide criteria to competencies Scoring guide criteria measure competencies in real time. University Outcomes External Standards Offering Outcomes Course Competencies Scoring Guide Criteria Performance Levels Stacy More about the FEAM Explain what real-time means to us You are here!

Competency Map: the first stop Heather or Stacy? And Capella’s example of competency transparency – the competency map. One of Capella’s outputs of how students are learning – can be used to support transcripts. Functions in real time. Provides transparent representation of level of competency attainment. Used as a vehicle to further define traditional grades. Great addition to an extended transcript. You are here!

Collaboration: IMS Global and capella University Who is IMS Global? How is Capella connected to IMS Global? “Sustaining innovations in higher education requires collaborative agreements amongst educational providers and educational technology vendors. IMS is uniquely positioned to lead the definition of those innovations through visionary initiatives and collaborative working groups.” – Jeff Grann, Academic Director of Assessment and Learning Analytics, Capella University Heather Now – Capella is now one of the many contributing members to IMS - to further the encourage innovation of internal tools and programs, in this case Capella’s competency map. Read the quote – it is important to continue to collaborate, etc. First of all, who is IMS Global? Non-profit collaborative – focus on educational and learning technology. Focus is on innovative products that can work together Example – IMS invented the LIT – single sign-on - for example, people can log on once in an online course in blackboard, but be signed into everything. How is Capella connected? Capella is part of this collaborative Is now using one IMS Global’s specs – the extended transcript. What is an extended transcript and how do they work together? Stacy will describe this on the next slide. Talk about IMS Global They invented the single sign on LIT –The Competency map combined with one of IMS’s applications, the extended transcript Projects in higher ed are moving toward providing an extended transcript shows experiences in your educational program IMS global embarked on this type of transcript Capella is also working towards using competency on You are here!

Extended Transcript: example Stacy (I made this a little bigger) Here is an example of an extended transcript University of Maryland University College *IMS Global Learning Consortium You are here!

collaboration Competency Map Stacy You are here!

Application with Extended transcript Stacy I tried to reformat this and messed up your fly-in – sorry! I think it’s supposed to go on Apply for Job – I can fix it so it does if this is correct You are here!

Arrival: Articulated Competency Map Stacy You are here! We did it!

The journey continues EDUCAUSE Virtual Session: “Competency Based Education and Extended Transcripts”

Questions for discussion In what ways is your institution prepared for an extended transcript? How can your students communicate knowledge and skills gained from their programs other than a letter grade? What are your reactions to an extended transcript?

Questions And maybe answers…. Thank you!
