Biologists’ Tools and Technology Notes 11g. Recognize the usefulness and limitations of models and theories as scientific representations of reality.

Objectives Describe the usefulness of modern imaging technologies. Explain the usefulness of computer models in studying biological systems.

Vocabulary Microscope

Imaging technologies provide new views of life.

Microscope Tool that provides an enlarged image of an object.

Biologists use microscopes to study cells, which are too small to be seen with the naked eye.

Different types of microscopes provide different views and magnifications. A light micrograph shows a two-dimensional image of a specimen. An SEM shows a three-dimensional image of a specimen’s surface. A TEM shows a two-dimensional image of a thin slice of a specimen.

Complex systems are modeled on computers.
