Final Year Project (Translation) Methodology University of Nizwa, 2016

Qualitative studies Qualitative research or study is primarily exploratory research/study. * It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. * It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research. Qualitative Research is also used to uncover trends in thought and opinions, and dive deeper into the problem. Qualitative data collection methods vary using unstructured or semi-structured techniques. Some common methods include focus groups (group discussions), individual interviews, and participation/observations, case studies, think-aloud protocols, etc. * The sample size is typically small, and respondents are selected to fulfill a given quota.

Quantitative studies Quantitative research (or study) is used to quantify the problem by way of generating numerical data or data that can be transformed into useable statistics. It is used to quantify attitudes, opinions, behaviors, and other defined variables – and generalize results from a larger sample population. Quantitative research uses measurable data to formulate facts and uncover patterns in research. Quantitative data collection methods are much more structured than qualitative data collection methods. Quantitative data collection methods include various forms of surveys – online surveys, paper surveys, mobile surveys and, face- to-face interviews, telephone interviews, longitudinal studies, website interceptors, online polls, corpus-based studies and systematic observations.

How to write it in your methodology .. This study (or this piece of research) is a qualitative/quantitative study …. The reason for adopting a qualitative/quantitative study is that …. * Data collection: I will collect my data through …(an interview/ a questionnaire/ observation, etc.) The reason for opting for this technique is that ….. * Analysis presentation: Why? Please tell us the reason(s) Here you need to tell us about your data collection technique s in detail)

Methodology of the research: Evaluate the following attempts made by translation students at the University of Nizwa Student 1 Methodology of the research: I will translate an excerpt from Charles Dickens’s novel ‘Christmas carol’ from English into Arabic by adopting certain strategies proposed by some scholars. Then, I will analyse the translation by commenting on the problems of translating culture-specific terms. Student 2 Methodology of the study: George Kershaw’s novel “Nothing but the Truth” is the target of this study. It is translated from English into Arabic using local strategies. Eventually comment on the translation using semantics and pragmatics fields.

Student 3 Methodology: The research study was conducted based on collected news items and their translation from many resources. Then try to analysis some of the items and find the strategies that are used in translation. After comparing the translation with the ST, it will be easy to see the differences between the two texts and the translators ideology. Student 4 Methods of research: I decided to translate two religious texts from English into Arabic, and then annotate the main ideological issues by touching on certain local strategies used to solve these problems.
