The art of simplicity, the power of words HAIKU The art of simplicity, the power of words

The entire poem is only 17 syllables long. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hzgzim5m7oU What is a Haiku? Haiku poems are short, brilliantly vivid poems that contain visually complete descriptions of moments in a poet’s experience. The entire poem is only 17 syllables long. The first line of poetry is 5 syllables, the second line is 7, and the third is 5 Haiku poems are often written in pairs to show contrast. For example, if one poem is written about Heaven, the other might be about Hell. A syllable is “an uninterrupted segment of speech consisting of a vowel sound, a diphthong, or a syllabic consonant.” Do you remember that rule from elementary school? Just put your hand on your chin and every time it moves up and down that is one syllable.
