Introducing Alice

Introduction to Alice Alice is computer program that allows the user to practice all the steps used in computer programming without having to learn language (syntax) of more complex programs It is actually a set of computer animations that turn the “programmer” into more of a “director”

Introduction to Alice Programs like Alice are called “Object Oriented” programming this breaks down the task the computer does into several smaller, interchangeable parts that perform tasks The Objects in Alice are actual physical objects (animals, rocks, people, etc)

Introduction to Alice We have to put Alice on your computer Open up “My Computer”, and open up Mr. Sweeny’s Handout folder i:\DOCS\Handout\Sweeny Find the Alice 2.2 folder and make a copy of that folder to your d: drive (this is the hard drive of the computer you’re working on)

Introduction to Alice Once the program has been unpacked and saved to your hard drive, you can start Alice by clicking on the Alice.exe icon You can also make a shortcut of this file and copy it to your h: drive so that it will be easier to get the program started in the future You will be ready to play with Alice!!!

Introduction to Alice Once you’ve started Alice, work through the 2 main tutorials that will help you get used to the Alice environment Start with “Start the Tutorial” Then move on to Tutorial 2 *make sure your computer sound is turned down a bit before starting this one*

Challenges… Create an island scene. Start by choosing a water world template. Add an island object. Use the scene editor to position the island a bit to the right of the center of the scene. Now add a goldfish to the left of the island. Position the goldfish so that it looks like it is swimming in the water to the left of the island
