A Preliminary Approach Setting the vision A Preliminary Approach

Methodology The objective of the setting the vision stage is to engage stakeholders in the joint vision for the plan area. Set the course for the eventual shape of the plan and its implementation. Vision should be rational and inventive. The vision should be complimented by a set of goals. Source: Strategic Partnership for the Mediterranean Sea large marine Ecosystem (MedPartnership). 2015. Preliminary visions for Samothrace

Becoming self-sufficient in terms of energy, water, waste, sewage, food. Improve efficiency of livestock system Encourage more renewable energy production Built a sewage system Improve utilizing waste Prepare a water management plan Reduce import of food products by creating a network of agricultural cooperatives

Create better perspectives for Samothrace inhabitants. Secure jobs and opportunities for inhabitants to live a happy and full filling life. Improve transport on the island and connection with mainland. Secure the education, healthcare and sport facilities for inhabitants.

Become leaders in “experience-based tourism” Develop “experience-based tourism” (alternative to mass tourism) by focusing on providing memorable highly- personalized experiences, human interaction, allowing to get to know and appreciate the Samothrace nature and culture. Attract tourists who want to experience life in Samothrace, meet the local people, try its food, enjoy the pristine nature and historical heritage.

Enhance sustainable development of Samothrace Acceptance of Samothrace as a MAB/UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. BR as the driving force merging all the previous visions. Empower public participation, NGO’s and sense of responsibility for the island among inhabitants and visitors. Protect nature, cultural and historical heritage.

Next steps Setting the vision on the basis of face to face interviews with targeted groups of Samothrace inhabitants and visitors.
