Thomas Paine’s Little Book 5 Key Points of Common Sense

Thomas Paine’s Little Book 1. Common Sense convinced American colonists that a complete break with Britain was necessary.

But Britain is the parent company, say some But Britain is the parent company, say some. Then the more shame upon her conduct. Even brutes do not devour their young, nor savages make war upon their families.

Thomas Paine’s Little Book 2. Society does not need a King

Men who look upon themselves born to reign and others to obey soon grow insolent. Selected from the rest of mankind, their minds are early poisoned by importance and the world they live in differs so materially from the world at large that they have but little opportunity of knowing its true interest and, when they succeed to the government, are frequently the most ignorant and unfit of any throughout the land.

One of the strongest natural proofs of the folly of the heredity right in kings is that nature disapproves it; otherwise she would not so frequently turn it into ridicule by giving mankind an ass for a lion

Thomas Paine’s Little Book 3. The large distance between England and America was creating many problems within the colonies

Thomas Paine’s Little Book 4. England was to small to rule over a huge country like America

There is something absurd in supposing that continent can be governed by an island.

Thomas Paine’s Little Book 5. Now is the time for Independence!
