Do Now: Writing “Goals”

READ: After reading Ch 2, we know Kino has found “the great pearl” (19). In Chapter 3, we will see that Kino begins to make goals and dream about his life could be with the pearl: “And in the incandescence of the pearl the pictures formed of the things Kino’s mind had considered in the past and had given up as impossible” (24).

Your task today: Write an essay explaining the importance of goal setting. Your essay should be one page long and include two examples to support your argument. This is an expository essay like the one we wrote last week

Prompt: Write an essay explaining the importance of goal setting. For the next two minutes, write one sentence stating the importance of goal setting. This can be your first sentence. Hint: Use the language of the prompt to write your complete sentence. Prompt: Write an essay explaining the importance of goal setting.

Take a breath and indent. Think of a character in a movie, television show, or book who has set, and perhaps achieved, a goal. For the next four minutes, explain how goal setting was important in this character’s life. Remember to focus on explaining or proving your first statement.

Take a breath and indent. Think of a current or historical event in which someone has set, and perhaps achieved, a goal. For the next four minutes, explain how goal setting was important in this person’s life/event. Remember to focus on explaining or proving your first statement.

Take a breath and indent one more time. In the next two minutes, end your essay by answering the question “so what?” - show your readers why this essay is important and meaningful.

Final Step! Take three minutes to edit and revise your paper. Follow these steps: Carefully and slowly re-read what you wrote. Re-write sentences or add/delete words to make sure your point is clear. Add transitions at the beginning of your paragraphs (first, for example, in addition) Did you use to, too, or two? What about their, there, they’re? If so, check to see that you have used the correct form (use your proofs!).
