Wants and Intentions When expressing wants and intentions we use would like to and want to. Ex. I would like to learn how to cook. (I want to learn how to cook.) When asking about someone’s wants and intentions we use would you like to or do you want to. Ex. Would you like to learn how to swim? (Do you want to learn how to swim?) It is always good to give a reason why you want to do something or do not want to do something. I would like to learn tai chi because I like martial arts. I don’t want to learn how to bowl because it looks boring. Other expressions: These express a strong desire to do (or not do) something. I’d would really like to do (try) something. I’d love to do (try) something. I really wouldn’t like to do something. I really don’t want to do (try) something.

In the first pair work activity, you will ask your partner, “Do you know how to do + activity?” Do you know how to ice skate? Do you know how to swim? Do you know how to play racquet ball? Do you know how to ballroom dance? Do you know how to do taekwondo? Do you know how to do tai chi? Do you know how to bowl? Do you know how to ski? With martial arts you must use Do you know how to do….? With martial arts you can also ask Do you know + martial art? For example: Do you know taekwondo? Team sports require the use of play. Ex. Do you know how to play basketball?

If your partner answers “No, I don’t know how to do + activity If your partner answers “No, I don’t know how to do + activity.” Ask if they would like to learn how. Remember: You should use Would you like to learn how to ice skate? Would you like to learn how to swim? Would you like to learn how to play racquet ball? Would you like to learn how to ballroom dance? Would you like to learn how to do taekwondo? Would you like to learn how to do tai chi? Would you like to learn how to bowl? Would you like to learn how to ski? Would you like to learn how to + activity? Do you want to learn how to + activity? DO NOT say Do you to learn When answering: You should say Yes, I would like to learn how to + activity OR No, I wouldn’t like to learn how to + activity DO NOT say Yes, I’m + activity Example Yes, I’m taewondo. You must tell the truth!
