To understand what target setting means and why we use it To develop knowledge on the difference between short and long term goals To understand why we need to log down the information learned and use it effectively when making future goals and targets. Learning intentions

Benefits of target setting It is important to set goals as they help motivate and give targets to aim for. Small training goals can give a performer a little push on the way to achieving their ultimate long-term goal. Increase in motivation and determination, as long as goals are realistic and attainable Reinforces desire to keep working Provides a performance focus Provides valuable feedback Benefits of target setting

S – Specific to the actual weakness and the conditions under which it is used in performance M – Measurable in that a starting point or level is established which can be compared to finishing level A – Achievable for the performer, e.g. the target is not too easy or too difficult R – Recorded in a format that will allow for accurate performance development monitoring T – Time set in order for training to be completed Targets should be:

These goals tend to change or evolve on a regular basis and will reflect the immediate improvements in a performance. They should provide stepping stones that will help a performer achieve their long-term goal. For example, a badminton player may set themselves short-term goals to: complete smash 10x 2min and movement drills in their next training session beat their training partner by five points in each set next week Improve a certain aspect of their game. Short term goals

Long-term goals Examples of long-term goals could be: winning a district tournament being selected for a district or national training squad winning a national title These goals are unlikely to change unless they are achieved ahead of schedule. They are typically set for tournaments or selections a year in advance but can be as long as three years depending on the target. Long-term goals
