Principals’ Meeting March 20, 2014 April 24, 2014 Slam Dunk the Math EOG Principals’ Meeting March 20, 2014 April 24, 2014

Learning Outcomes Principals will: learn effective ways to prepare students for end of the year assessments explore resources to help identify prioritized standards at each grade level to help make informed instructional decisions about pacing modifications and areas for targeted interventions view EOG sample questions and activities as strategies for test prep view a resource that shows common errors made by students on these sample questions

Preparing for Assessments Remember that time preparing for assessments should not mean lost instructional time! Take a moment to read through the information provided by NCDPI. What sticks out to you?

Collaboration Time How do teachers in your building prepare for assessments?

Available Resources Menu of Review Activities for 3-5 Post-EOG unit Resources now available on CMAPP

Available Resources Resources now available on CMAPP. NEW SECTION completely!!

EOG Review Menu of EOG Review activities at grades 3-5 End of year activities for post-EOG These will both be posted to CMAPP soon. The EOG review will serve as a menu of different ways to review for EOGs, with a focus on creative ways to use the released items. The Post-EOG unit is an investigative study that reviews key concepts from the current year in preparation for “big ideas” of the next year.

Prioritization of Standards These are the projected percentages for each domain at grades 3-5. Let’s take a look at the exact percentages from the 2012-2013 tests. http://www.ncpublicschools.org/docs/acre/assessment/math.pdf

2013 EOG Goal Summaries % Correct You will see there are 44 items on the EOG in grades 3-5. Half of the items are calculator active and inactive. Most of the items in the calculator “active” section will not require the use of the calculator. Then, the test is broken down into percentages based on the mathematical domains at that grade level. The % correct is indicated for each grade level. % Correct

Most of the items in the calculator “active” section will not require the use of the calculator. 13.6% of the calculator-inactive items were “Gridded Response” items. Now What?! Due to inclement weather, teachers are in a position to make some tough instructional decisions about pacing. Let’s explore some ways that we can support them in this decision-making process.

Resource #1: Goal Summaries

Resource #2: Scope & Sequence Documents

Resource #3: Major Work of the Grade Posted to CMAPP under the Resources tab at EVERY grade level Identified by the writers of the CCSS-M Used by DPI to identify major areas of focus

Resource #4: Correlation to 5 Levels

Questions to Consider Where are the teachers RIGHT now? How many instructional days are left? Where will days be cut? Where should the focus be for review & remediation? Have grade levels discuss these questions in PLTs. These conversations can happen K-5. In grades K-2, teachers can use the major work of the grade (posted on Principals’ wiki) to explore major areas versus supporting areas. This will help them identify content on which to focus more heavily. In grades 3-5, teachers can also use the major work of the grade document, but should focus in heavily on the EOG goal summaries.
