Immersion Day 4: Graphic Novel Memoir Rationale: Memoir writers think about their audience and look for engaging genres or forms to present their stories that best reflect their thoughts and ideas. Your JOB today: You will learn about features of the graphic novel & notice the importance of both the text & pictures in telling the entire story.

Immersion Day 4: Graphic Novel Memoir Many students read graphic novels nowadays. In your notebook take a second and explain what makes them different from regular novels?

Graphic Novels Different? Production of Graphic Novels originally came from authors reading comic books. Comics are funny or adventurous publications put panels of comics together to tell a long story. Graphic Novels Different? Pictures Dialogue Bubbles Short Text

All events are based on the author’s own life She teaches us about Chinese culture and history. Remind students to pay close attention to the pictures as well as the text, as there is information in them that is necessary in understanding the story. Begin reading from intro on pg 7 Read “A Sad, Sad Day” pg 14-27

This is not something that we can connect with here, is it? Draw connections between Little White Duck and our first mentor text So Far From the Sea. How are they similar? How do the narrators utilize the flashback technique? How did the author of Little White Duck use both text and pictures to tell her stories? How does this form help her tell her story?
